To many people today love is an emotion that can be fallen into and fallen out of. God’s expression and expectation of love are dramatically different. He gave His life for us before we knew or loved Him. To God love is action and sacrifice regardless of reciprocation. He expects us to love each other in the same way. Once love becomes about what you can do for your spouse a truly deep and intimate relationship can begin.
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. –1 John 4:10-11
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. –1 John 3:16
We love him, because he first loved us. –1 John 4:19
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; –Ephesians 5:25
So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: –Ephesians 5:28-29
